Engine 9 Studios ends 2014 on high note; 2015 looking good too.
GREETINGS, SALUTATIONS, FELICITATIONS AND JOYFUL LIBATIONS, FRIENDS OF E9S!!! (Whew! Glass of water please!)
As most of you know, things have been kinda’ busy, kinda’ hectic at the studio for me. Hence, my extended absence from the blogosphere, social media, and appearances. But, it’s been a good kind of busy and a good kind of hectic. No complaints. As my friend Carol Ann always told me, “Sammy, busy is a good problem to have.”
Better than good, I say. And I’m thankful for it.
“Enough busy talk, Sammy!!! What the hell have you been doing?!?”, you ask.
Let me share.
I have spent the past year working in my studio on projects and doing a lot of publishing and editorial design in NYC (will be sharing that with you soon too). BUT, I’ve also been very focused on the business aspect of E9S during the better part of 2014/2015. Focused on things like: improving infrastructure, financing, upgrading the studio, setting up future projects, site version 2.0 yada yada yada. All very necessary things and doing it all by myself at the moment.
At the forefront of this list of all things business, iiiiiiiiiis, drum roll please … protection (Noooooooo – not that kind of protection you dirty dirty dog you!). It’s the kind of protection every creative entity in business must consider. More importantly, it’s something each creative needs to do their due diligence with… copyrights and trademarks. Especially if you’re seriously considering throwing your hat into the licensing arena.
I know, I know… yawn.
Although the business aspect may not always be as appealing as designing the next killer cg/comic character, you have to consider this about your next knock-em-dead creation: do you want someone stealing your hard work? Exactly! I wouldn’t either.
If you’ve got IP (intellectual property) … protect it!
Protect your art, your script, your game, your website, your characters, your whatever … you get the idea. Protect the brand you’re working so hard to develop!!! PROTECT YOURSELF!!!! PUHLEEEEASE!!!
Seriously. Protect yourself.
Beyond handling the copyrights for my work on my own, Engine 9 Studios has been working with an outstanding firm that has been handling my trademark and licensing affairs for some time now and I’ve been very happy with their results. Working with the team at Archer and Greiner, has made it possible for E9S to move with confidence and security into the world of licensing now.
Nancy Ohanian, you’re an angel! Mark Sever, you’re a genius! Thank you both!
I’m looking to take all of my characters and concepts to the next level. Of course, I’ll provide updates along the journey. Very excited about all of the possibilities.
What’s on the radar? Everything.
Stay tuned.
Peace. Love. And MOONCAKES!
Sammy
