Nothing radical, but Apple’s latest OS is worth upgrading to.

Truth be told … I hate performing upgrades. The backups, reformatting, installs, reinstalls – the whole damn thing. It’s time consuming and most times, not so smooth. Which explains why I didn’t upgrade my Mac OS for a while.

I simply wanted to wait … and I did.

SO, I ran Snow Leopard for a loooooooong time. Ran it until its paws bled and until I couldn’t avoid it any longer. Until there was an upgrade cycle worthy of, well … upgrading.

With a looming hard drive replacement in the works and the recent release of OS X Mavericks, it felt like it was the perfect storm and I was all in.    I’ll put a fine point on it … OS X Mavericks is outstanding. It’s the obvious step forward towards the unification of Apple’s multiple OS environments. Mavericks simply feels a lot like iOS. And even on my older 17″ dual core MacBook Pro, it feels pretty snappy.

3D and Open GL

I live by Open GL and in Mavericks it is very responsive and stable. 3D Sculpting in 3D Coat and modeling in Lightwave are vastly improved. I was at a 400K poly count in Lightwave and experienced no hiccups. Next step is to see how a multi-million poly count  performs in ZBrush.

Adobe Creative Suite

Adobe’s Creative Suite is running nicely as well. Since upgrading to Mavericks, the most improved performance would have to be in Illlustrator. Vector creation is smooth and no longer smeared with a buggy experience. Lovin’ illustrator right about now 😉

All in all … super-pleased with how smooth the upgrade cycle went and very happy with the latest iteration of Apple’s venerable operating system.
